- championships in Tokyo, Japan, Carl was
- 30 years old, older than most sprinters and
- jumpers. But he blazed through the 100
- meters in a world-record time of 9.86
- seconds. (That record time was lowered
- to 9.85 by U.S. sprinter Leroy Burrell, in
- 1994.)
