  13. championships in Tokyo, Japan, Carl was
  14. 30 years old, older than most sprinters and 
  15. jumpers. But he blazed through the 100
  16. meters in a world-record time of 9.86
  17. seconds. (That record time was lowered 
  18. to 9.85 by U.S. sprinter Leroy Burrell, in 
  19. 1994.)
